A pit stop turned into an amazing surprise when we discovered the Blackfalds Inclusive Playground. Photos by Edmonton Playgrounds.

Has this ever happened to you? As we approached Red Deer, driving north on Highway 2 in Central Alberta, we asked the girls if they needed to go to the bathroom. Of course, no one did… and of course, mere moments later, someone did – very badly! A quick search told us our next option was Blackfalds – so we turned off the highway and into this lovely central Alberta community – where a surprise was waiting for us!

We couldn’t believe it when we discovered the bright and beautiful Blackfalds Inclusive Playground! We pulled into the parking lot, and stopped first at the (inclusive) porta-potty. Then we set off to explore!

This playground is uniquely built into a hill. Users can walk or roll up the sloped sides to a ramp that extends from the main playground structure right into the hill. There is a triple slide off that large structure, as well as a smaller double slide built into the hill!

A rare in-ground merry-go-round, as well as a taller rope merry-go-round, were highlights for us. I think it goes without saying that we loved the double zipline! One side features an inclusive chair, while the other features a platter. The music area, with flower xylophones and drums, were very popular with our players too! Users may also enjoy a four-seat teeter-totter, a bouncy egg seat, a variety of finger games and puzzles Climbers, gymnastics bars and monkey bars round out the main structure.

The pour-in-place rubber surface at this playground is not only decorated with colourful features, like a hopscotch, it also includes raised rainbow bubbles for hopping!

The perimeter of this playground is fenced and there are a few picnic tables and benches on site.
