Visiting Drumheller and the Alberta Badlands? This list has our family’s top picks for must-do activities in Drumheller! We think your family will agree – these are things kids love in Drumheller!

A few notes: We’ve always visited Drumheller in late April or early May – ahead of the really busy tourist season. That means the crowds are down, but it also means some attractions aren’t open yet for the season.

What are your family’s favourite things to do in Drumheller? We’d love to know what you’d add to our list!

1. Royal Tyrrell Museum

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is home to one of the largest dinosaur collections in the world. It’s a museum that truly has something for everyone – including plenty of hands-on and kid-friendly displays and activities. There are interactive features throughout the museum – including several down low, for the smallest dino-fans! Our kids love the Learning Lounge and spend plenty of time in their racing dinosaurs, building dinosaurs and more!

Outside the museum is an excellent playground and a short (approx 1km) walking path along a trail through a section of badlands. See our post on the Best Playgrounds in Drumheller for more on the Museum Playground!

2. World’s Largest Dinosaur

A visit to Drumheller isn’t complete without an encounter with Tyra, the World’s Largest Dinosaur! She’s located at the Drumheller Tourist Information office. Guests can pay $5 per person for the chance to climb 106 stairs for the chance to catch the view out Tyra’s impressive jaw!

Staff at the information centre are very helpful and knowledgable. There is also a small souvenir shop located on site.

3. Drumheller Dinosaur Walk

Fun, whimsical, colourful and funny dinosaurs are located all around the town! Be sure to snap photos with your favourites! We brought along the kids scooters to make our art walk even more fun for little legs!

4. The Hoodoos

The Willow Creek Hoodoos, located just 15 minutes east of Drumheller, is a popular spot for visitors. This site offers a mix of mandatory pathways, around the more delicate formations, and space for exploration. There are even “selfie stations” set up where guests can set their camera to snap the perfect family pic at the Hoodoos!

5. Explore the Badlands

Our visits have included exploration in the badlands just outside the Royal Tyrrell Museum, as well as Horseshoe Canyon and Horsethief Canyon. Horseshoe Canyon is our favourite. There is a large parking area with bathrooms, a choice of stairs or trail to access the canyon bottom and plenty of trail options to explore. Horsethief Canyon is a viewing site only, as the canyon is on private property.

6. Star Mine Suspension Bridge

The Star Mine Suspension Bridge reopened to the public in early 2024 after being closed for four years. It was a fun, quick adventure with kids and a great place to snap photos! Apparently it’s also a favourite spot among local fishers!

7. Support Local!

I have a total lack of photos to support this one, but I’ll share some of our favourite local businesses that we’ve enjoyed on visits to Drumheller. Vintage Tap House is an excellent choice for food! There is a bar side and a family-friendly restaurant side. We all enjoyed excellent meals here.

Black Mountain Roasters is a top choice for superb coffee and baked goods. We also discovered Drumheller Soda Works here, fun flavours of soda with the coolest can designs. The kids loved them!

Drumheller’s Napier Movie Theatre is throwback fun and a classic small-town movie theatre! We enjoyed a show here with the kids on one of our visits.
