Kinistinaw Park
Swirls of purple, green and black – I couldn’t stop snapping as the girls rode around me in this tiny-but-fun rubber-pased play area at Kinistinaw park in The Quarters area of Edmonton’s Boyle Street neighbourhood. This new gathering space was quiet today, but I expect its popularity will increase as the city moves into phase 2 of development. Right now, Kinistinâw Park is a beautiful wooden walkway under a gorgeous red canopy. There is ample seating throughout. Phase 2 is expected to include a water play area and a natural park.
The red awning has a flower pattern on its underside as well as down its sides. The art, called “Family Pattern” was designed by Métis artist Tiffany Shaw-Collinge. According to her website, the flowers are designed to represent traditional Cree/Métis beading patterns. The website also notes that Kinsitinâw is Plains Cree for “us three”.
