James Gibbons School

Summer 2024 was the summer of playground sustainability! It’s the first year in my memory when so many older-but-still-awesome playgrounds were kept and added to! Several schools, including James Gibbons School, added new great playgrounds to what they already had, rather than ripping out equipment that still had life and play value.

The addition at James Gibbons School is sure to be a hit with kids! First and foremost – it has a warped wall! (Summer 2024 also appeared to be the summer of the playground warped wall… but I digress.) The wall leads up to the main structure with 3 great slides. Off the back are monkey bars, rings, gliders, climbing walls and other climbers.

The new playground also has some unique accessory features. It has a “Monster Maker” turntable. (The only other one I know of is at B ritannia Youngstown Playground.) There is also a space-themed memory game as well as “Market” and “Garage” imagination stations.

The older-but-still-awesome playground also has a circuit set up. There are a few mysterious features here, including the lowest spring riders we’ve ever seen and a slide that is blocked at the top and apparently has been for many years!

There are benches and picnic tables near the playground, plus a basketball hoop that is lower than the typical. A green space stretches beyond the playground.
